I am planning on getting a motorcycle and if it gets damaged I can accept that, so do I still need to get insurance (or can I just ride without it?)

You most definately have to have insurance. They will not let you register it without it, so there is your answer.
By law, you have to carry at least the state minimum liability coverage. Liability covers damage you do to other people’s property.
Yes you do. Every motorized vehicle on California highways must be insured. The idea is so you can pay for the damages you may do to other people or their property. You also must wear a helmet.

Federal agents have arrested a Northern California man for allegedly waiving a firearm at a national park near the Oregon border.
Authorities say Micha Godfrey of Tule Lake was charged Friday with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, the 37-year-old Godfrey was under investigation for threatening to kill DEA agents and their families. The agency said it received information earlier this month suggesting that Godfrey made threats in e-mails to a medical marijuana Web site.
A DEA spokesman says Godfrey was found carrying a revolver and wearing a bulletproof vest when he was arrested at the park, about 100 miles north of Redding.

This is because bad stuff can happen at any time.
Most bad stuff happens in an accident, but it can get stolen, damaged, cause damage. If you own it, you are responsible, unless you got insurance first.
If police stop you for any random reason, they will probably need to see your
* license is correct for type of vehicle you driving (you do know that a different license needed for motorcyce, than for car?)
* ownership … you have right to be driving this vehicle
* licence plates properly registered to ownership
* wearing suitable safety gear like helmet
* proof of insurance
If any of this evidence is missing, the presumption is that you are driving illegally.
